* Be sure you understand scale when it comes to maps and how to estimate size of features on a map using the scale.

  • What are some of the possible advantages of choosing an island as the site for Tenochtitlan?
  • Look at the sources on page 162 in your text. Consider this information - Do you think that these sources give a fair and balanced look at the Aztec practice of human sacrifice? (This is a paragraph question
  • Should service to the state (country) be the main goal of citizens? (Remember to support your answer with evidence.) You will need reasons for Yes/No/Maybe
  • Did Aztec society benefit from its belief that all citizens should work primarily to strengthen the state?
  • Imagine you are a student at an Aztec school for commoners (telpochcalli) When the Spanish first arrive in Tenochtitlan, you meet a Spanish soldier and describe the aims and activities of your typical school day. The Aztecs - Codex

Hey, here are some cool links for you to use as you are creating your codex

Tuesday, 23 April 2013

The Aztecs thought the good of the people as a whole was more important than any individual. How was this view reflected in its social structure, educational system, and perspective on citizenship responsibilities? Use a fishbone organizer to gather your information.

  1. Why was their social structure so rigid?
  2. How did their social structure honour the gods?
  3. How did their educational system maintain their social structure?
  4. How would you describe the relationship between the Aztec gods, fate, and social hierarchy?
  5. The Aztecs thought their disciplined structure protected them from other societies. How would this belief influence their future conflict with the Spanish?

(Here is a Google docs copy of the fish bone, Thanks Mr. Oram)

Becoming Canada (Chapter 6 Questions)

Invaders or Liberators?

(Discuss)

American rebel soldiers invaded Québec in 1775. They thought the Canadiens would see them as liberators. After all, weren’t the Canadiens oppressed under British rule, too? What did the Canadiens really think?

  • The QuébecAct kept NewYork traders out of the fur trade around the Great Lakes. Whom would the Canadien fur traders and merchants support?
  • The seigneurs had influence in the government. Whom would they support?
  • Most Americans were Protestant. Whom would the Catholic Church support?
  • The habitants had regained their language and religion rights under the Québec Act. Whom would they support?
The Americans faced fierce resistance. On the last day of 1775, they attacked Québec City. It was a disaster! There was a blinding snowstorm. The rebels got lost in Québec City’s maze of narrow streets. They were easy targets for the British and Canadien defenders, who fired on them from the walls. The Americans called off their attack.
  1. Fighting in the streets of Québec City on New Year’s Eve, 1775. Local militia (wearing red toques) and British soldiers fire on the Americans, who attempt to scale a wall. Alan Daniels painted this scene 200 years after the battle. What resources can an artist use to find out how events happened?

Read pages 125-126.  (We read this yesterday) Based on the material you have read, answer the seven questions below.  Please use complete sentences.  This will be a homework check for next class.

(link to google docs version)

  1. Why did the people of the Thirteen Colonies begin to resent Britain?
  2. Why did the American rebels hope the Canadians would join their revolt? .
  3. A LIBERATOR is someone who frees another person from oppression or suffering.  Why did the Americans think that the Canadians would see them as liberators instead of invaders?
  4. Explain why the Americans called off their attack in Quebec in 1775?
  5. When did the Americans win their War of Independence against the British?
  6. Define “British North America.”
  7. In one well-developed paragraph (MINIMUM of 8-10 sentences), write about what you think might have happened if Canadians HAD joined the Americans and fought against the British.  How would our national identity have been different?  What would have been some advantages of joining the Americans during and after this fight?  What would have been some of the disadvantages of joining the Americans during and after this fight?

Aztec Education

How are a society's social structure and it's educational system related?

Think of this question in terms of Canadian society today. Are there different schools for different members of our society?

To punish children who misbehaved, some Aztec parents threw handfuls of hot chili peppers into a fire and forced them to inhale the fiery smoke. They believed that they were doing what was best for their society and their child. How have attitudes regarding what is best for children changed?

Aztec Social Structure

There were two main classes consisting of nobles and commoners. There were also subdivisions in each class with some people having more wealth and power than others. In most cases one’s position in society was determined at birth but students will see that hard work could result in a person moving to a higher order in society.

*remember hierarchy of the middle ages from unit 1!

Discuss:
How did the  social structure of the Aztec society tell us what was important tot he Aztec people?

How does worldview influence what you do?

How does a society's way of looking at the world influence its' customs and the way it's people make decisions?

Discussion Point:

How does the way we make our living in Alberta affect our values?  Things to think about:
  • Environment (& environmental policy, Oil, oil sands, recycling, etc.)
  • Gun laws
  • Wealth & Status
What is important to us?

Expanding the Empire

How did the Aztec worldview influence the way the people interacted with other cultures?
Read Pages 165 and 166
There is a bit of a paradox with the Aztecs here:geographic isolation in a high valley surrounded by mountains, combined with an inclination to fight and a need to trade.

Why would the Aztec empire need to increase it's trade with other nations?

How can the need for increased trade sometimes lead a nation to war?
Aztec codex of trade goods

Read Pages 167-168

How do Canadians respond when Canadian peacekeepers or soldiers are killed while carrying out their duties?
